There are several approaches to under-desk cable management, each with its own strengths. This article compares four popular methods so you can choose the one that fits your budget, skill level, and desk type.
Method 1: Cable Ties + Clips
The cheapest and easiest method. All you need are zip ties and adhesive clips from a dollar store. Setup takes about 15 minutes and requires no tools. It works well if you have five or fewer cables. The downside is that cables remain somewhat visible, so the look is not perfectly clean.
Method 2: Cable Management Tray
A tray mounted under the desk holds the power strip and excess cable out of sight. It gives a much cleaner appearance and makes floor cleaning easy. Cost is around ¥1,000–¥3,000 and installation requires a screwdriver. Ideal for setups with ten or more cables.
Method 3: Wire Grid + Ties
Attach a wire grid under your desk and secure cables to it with ties. This gives you complete freedom to arrange components, and the grid can hold large AC adapters that might not fit in a tray. The main drawback is that a high number of ties can look messy.
Method 4: Cable Duct (Raceway)
A plastic or metal channel that runs along the wall or desk leg, hiding cables completely. This delivers the best visual result and is perfect for offices or home spaces where appearance matters. It costs more than the other methods and makes adding or swapping cables more difficult.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you are on a tight budget, start with ties and clips. If you have many cables, get a tray. If appearance is your top priority, install a cable duct. If you enjoy DIY and want maximum flexibility, go with a wire grid. You can also combine methods — for example, using a tray for the power strip and a duct for the cables that run down the desk leg.
