When people decide to tidy up their desk area, the very first thing they encounter is cable clutter. Between your PC, monitors, phone charger, desk lamp, and peripherals, it’s common to have at least four or five cables running under a single desk. When these become tangled, they not only get in the way of cleaning but can also lead to damaged wires or accidents.
Step One: Assess the Situation
Start by pulling your desk away from the wall and taking a photo of the current state underneath. List every device connected and trace where each cable goes. This bird’s-eye view makes planning much easier. Next, measure the distance from each device to your power strip so you know what length of cable you are working with.
Three Beginner-Friendly Tools
- Velcro cable ties: Reusable and infinitely adjustable. Available at any dollar store.
- Cable clips: Stick them to the underside of your desk with adhesive backing. Once you have decided on your routing path, clip the cables in place as you go.
- Cable management tray: A tray that mounts under your desk to hold the power strip and any excess cable length.
Step-by-Step Execution
Unplug every cable and clear the underside completely. Mount your power strip inside the cable tray and attach the tray to the center of the desk’s underside. Bundle the cables with ties, route them along the desk legs, and secure them with clips at intervals. Plug everything back in and verify each device works.
Maintaining Order
Every time you add a new device, take a moment to re-bundle the cables. A quick check every three months will keep your setup looking clean and prevent small issues from becoming big tangles.
