Common Mistakes to Avoid in Monitor Arm Setup

Setting up a monitor arm is straightforward, but several common mistakes can lead to frustration or even damage. Here is what to watch out for.

Mistake 1: Ignoring Weight Limits

If your monitor is heavier than the arm’s rating, the arm will sag or, worse, fail completely, dropping your screen. Always check your monitor’s weight and choose an arm rated for at least 1.5 times that amount.

Mistake 2: Wrong Desk Thickness

Clamp-mount arms require a specific desk thickness range. If your desk is too thin (under 10 mm), the clamp cannot grip properly. If it is too thick (over 60 mm), the clamp may not reach. Measure before you buy.

Mistake 3: Cable Length Issues

Once the arm is installed, moving the monitor through its full range may pull cables taut and disconnect them. Check that your video and power cables are long enough before mounting everything. Use extensions if needed.

Mistake 4: Non-VESA Monitors

Some modern ultra-slim monitors do not have VESA mounting holes. While adapter plates exist, they may void your warranty. Confirm VESA compatibility before purchasing an arm.

Mistake 5: Skipping Tension Adjustment

Every gas-spring arm has a tension adjustment screw. If you skip this step, the monitor may drift down or be too stiff to move. Adjust the tension after installation so the monitor stays put but moves smoothly when pushed.

Avoiding these five mistakes will save you time, money, and potential damage to your equipment.
